Orioles Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Nick Markakis is the Orioles‘ top young position player. But the team seems set on keeping him as one of its lesser-paid players, too.

A report in The Sun indicated the Orioles and their right fielder would hold off on long-term contract discussions until after the season. Markakis is in his third season in the major leagues, and he is under team control through 2011.

The Orioles would not address the subject, with president Andy MacPhail telling The Sun simply, “We don’t comment on negotiations.”

Markakis, 24, teams with center fielder Adam Jones, 22, as the future of the club, and the forefront of the rebuilding effort.

Since debuting in 2006, he has a .295 career average with 53 home runs and 226 RBIs in 405 games.

Jones Is Penciled In After Injury

BALTIMORE, July 21 — Baltimore Orioles right-hander RadhamA?s Liz threw one more ball than he did strikes on Monday night, hardly a formula for success. He issued six walks — one intentional — in his 5 2/3 innings against the Toronto.

But it’s what the young righty didn’t do in an 8-3 victory that gave him and Manager Dave Trembley reason to feel good. Liz allowed only three runs while steering clear of the big innings that have plagued him during his last two starts.

“I feel happy with what I did today,” said Liz, who improved to 4-2. “I know I walked a lot of guys but I think all my pitches were working today.”
